Creative ways to decorate hoodies and sweats: step-by-step demos and techniques
Whether you’re looking to refresh your decoration skills or explore new ideas, this guide takes you behind the scenes with step-by-step demos and techniques to help you create standout hoodies and sweats your customers will love.
The merch revolution is here
Step into any current festival, sports event, music gig or corporate function and you’ll witness it everywhere: branded merchandise that people genuinely want to wear. Gone are the days of scratchy, uncomfortable promotional clothing that ends up forgotten in the back of wardrobes. Today’s consumers expect merch that feels as good as it looks – and our product range offers plenty of options to deliver just that. This week, we’re shining a light on Gildan’s new Softstyle™ hoodies and sweats in an 80/20 cotton/poly blend with a 100% cotton outer surface, making them ideal for the full range of decoration treatments. Behind every great piece of event merch is a decoration process that achieves the finished look. We’re taking you behind the scenes to demonstrate how different decoration techniques can create a whole range of styles for every type of event.

High build screen print
The use of multiple layers of thick ink during screen printing creates a pronounced, textured finish using this method. In this video, with the Gildan GD067 Softstyle™ midweight fleece adult hoodie in the colour Paragon, you can see how the use of a capillary film and thick stencil helps to create sharp, clean edges, showcasing how this method can be ideal for block designs, as well as those with more flow to them.

Appliqué
This is a great method for elevating the feel of a hoodie or sweatshirt into something more premium. The appliqué process, which involves sewing shapes into a garment to achieve depth and texture, is evolving. In this video, we demonstrate the process using the Gildan GD066 Softstyle™️ midweight fleece adult crew neck in Royal. The fleece is laser cut, to outline the shape, then filled in with thread to create a stunning, textured finish.

Screen print
This method sees ink pushed through a mesh stencil directly onto the fabric, producing strong, vibrant and durable prints that are perfect for high-volume printing on hoodies and sweats. Consider the use of metallic colours, as seen in this video with the Gildan GD067 Softstyle™ midweight fleece adult hoodie in the colour Navy, to really help finer details stand out.

Puff print
This technique has come back into fashion in recent years – and for good reason! Instantly elevating a hoodie or sweatshirt, puff print brings dimension and texture to the design using a puff additive, then a drying process – which is where the magic puff happens. Learn more about the technique in this video with the Gildan GD066 Softstyle™ midweight fleece adult crew neck in the colour Red.

Large embroidery
Building on the principles of a traditional technique, large embroidery supersizes the process to cover a much larger surface area of the garment. Like traditional embroidery, a range of colours can be used to create striking and durable designs. Particularly suited to hoodies and sweats, as well as outerwear, you can see large embroidery in action in this video with the Gildan GD067 Softstyle™ midweight fleece adult hoodie in the colour Off White. Note how the process includes a final steam of the finished garment to ensure it’s instantly wearable when it reaches the customer.
